VARICELLA - ZOSTER
*Chicken pox (Varicella), Shingles (Herpes zoster)

Practice / Additional Precautions:
ROUTINE: Localized shingles

AIRBORNE and CONTACT:
- Disseminated shingles
- Immunocompromised with localized shingles
- Chicken pox (confirmed or suspected)
Mode of Transmission:
Airborne
Direct and indirect contact
Infectious Material:
Respiratory secretions
Drainage from cutaneous lesions
Vesicle fluid
Duration of Additional Precautions:
Disseminated shingles / Chicken pox: until skin lesions have crusted and dried
Immunocompromised clients / patients: until 24 hours after antiviral therapy started
Signs & Symptoms:
Vesicular rash, sometimes fever
Comments:
  • Only staff immune to varicella should enter room
  • Susceptible and immunocompromised clients / patients should not enter / share a room with infected or suspected client / patient
  • Notify infection control
